At Fusion, we’ve come up with a new acronym that we’re excited about: ROOMr — R-O-OM-r. The first R stands for recruiting, as it’s critical to recruit the right people and to take time doing so.

O stands for onboarding. The definition of onboarding in most organizations is, “Here’s your desk. Here’s your computer. Here’s your key. We wish you the best.” However, our definition of onboarding in this particular acronym is the time it takes until you are proficient in your role. This might take 3 months. It might be 6 or even 15 months.

Then there’s OM, which stands for ongoing management. Once you’re onboarded, ongoing management is critical.

If you get these three things right, R, O and OM — recruiting, onboarding and ongoing management — you get the final small R, which is retention. All of us want retention. These key elements will deliver it consistently for your organization.
